about

My third cassette using the name Trance, in 1989, was a departure from the previous two noise-rock-style releases. For years, my favorite albums had been Coil's "Horse Rotorvator" and Foetus' "Nail", and when I obtained a used sampler, I put it into use immediately. I still have the same Ensoniq Mirage, and its somewhat dirty 16-bit samples (saved on 3.5" floppy disks!) sound wonderful. So on this release, I indulged my more industrial-orchestral tendencies, and I still like it a great deal. It's still got its share of noisy guitar, but the strings, percussion, and piano on songs like "March of the Dead..." and "Shooting" were exactly what I was going for back then.

This was also recorded while I was doing the soundtracks for a couple of machine performances by Survival Research Laboratories, and I can hear a few samples here and there which were taken from recordings made of the machines at the SRL warehouse. It's hard to describe how exhilarating San Francisco was around this time: weird experimental and outré bands playing most nights of the week at venues around town, amazing record stores and book stores hosting events, and no shortage of weirdos doing who-knows-what around the city. It all made for an endlessly inspirational environment.

You'll notice that the cover just says "Master Tape"! That's because every copy of this one had a different picture on the front. If you buy a copy of this, I encourage you to change the cover picture to your own choice of image, in the same spirit. Or just enjoy the minimalism and bad handwriting.
